A letter on a label cannot answer that question by itself. One style may fit close to the body, while another is designed to feel loose. Even within the same store, different garments can have different measurements. The best way to choose is to compare your measurements with the information for the specific item and ask when something is missing.

Take your measurements in a few minutes

Use a flexible measuring tape and stand naturally. Keep the tape level, close to your body and comfortable, without pulling it tight. Measure over light clothing or underwear rather than a thick sweater.

Write down these three numbers:

• Bust: Around the fullest part of your chest.
• Waist: Around your natural waist, usually the narrower part of your torso.
• Hips: Around the fullest part of your hips and seat.

For pants, the inseam from the top of the inner leg to the hem can also help you judge length. For a dress or skirt, check the item’s listed length and consider where you would like the hem to fall.

Keep your numbers in your phone in both inches and centimeters. That way, you can check them whenever you shop.
